| BLOOMING DESERTS | 꽃피는 사막 | |

[ Isaiah 35:1 - 35:7 ] 1. The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, 2. it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. 3. Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; 4. say to those with fearful hearts, "Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you." 5. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. 7. The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs. In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow. |

| A century ago, lush forest covered roughly 40 percent of Ethiopia, but today it’s around 4 percent. Clearing acreage for crops while failing to protect the trees has led to an ecological crisis. The vast majority of the remaining small patches of green are protected by churches. For centuries, local Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido churches have nurtured these oases in the midst of the barren desert. If you look at aerial images, you see verdant islands surrounded by brown sand. Church leaders insist that watching over the trees is part of their obedience to God as stewards of His creation. The prophet Isaiah wrote to Israel, a people who lived in an arid land where bare desert and brutal droughts threatened. And Isaiah described the future God intended, where “the desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom” (ISAIAH 35:1). God intends to heal His people, but He intends to heal the earth too. He’ll “create new heavens and a new earth” (65:17). In God’s renewed world, “the desert will bloom with flowers” (35:2 NIRV). God’s care for creation—including people—motivates us to care for it too. We can live in sync with His ultimate plan for a healed and whole world—being caretakers of what He’s made. We can join God in making all kinds of deserts bloom with life and beauty. WINN COLLIER |
백년 전에는 울창한 숲이 에티오피아 국토의 약 40퍼센트를 차지했지만, 현재는 4퍼센트 정도밖에 되지 않습니다. 나무를 보호하지 않고 경작지로 개간한 것이 생태학적 위기로 이어진 것입니다. 남아있는 작은 수풀들의 대부분은 교회들이 보호하고 있습니다. 여러 세기 동안 에티오피아 정교회 테와히도 교회에 속한 여러 지역 교회들이 척박한 사막 한가운데서 이 오아시스들을 가꾸어 왔습니다. 항공 사진을 보면 갈색 모래 바다에 둘러싸인 푸른 섬들을 볼 수 있습니다. 교회 지도자들은 나무를 돌보는 것이 하나님이 창조하신 자연의 청지기로서 하나님께 순종하는 일이라고 주장합니다. 이사야 선지자는 메마른 사막과 극심한 가뭄으로 위협받는 불모의 땅에 살고 있는 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님이 의도하신 미래에 대해 이렇게 표현했습니다. “광야와 메마른 땅이 기뻐하며, 사막이 백합화같이 피어 즐거워할 것이다”(이사야 35:1, 새번역). 하나님은 그의 백성들을 치유하려 하시고 이 땅도 치유하려고 하십니다. 하나님은 “새 하늘과 새 땅을 창조하실”(65:17) 것입니다. 하나님이 새롭게 만드신 세상에는 “사막에 꽃이 무성하게 필”(35:2, 새번역) 것입니다. 사람들을 포함한 모든 창조물을 보살피시는 하나님을 보면 우리도 하나님의 창조물을 돌볼 마음을 품게 됩니다. 우리는 하나님이 만드신 것을 돌봄으로써 치유된 온전한 세상을 만드시려는 하나님의 궁극적인 계획에 맞추어 살 수 있습니다. 모든 사막을 생명과 아름다움으로 꽃피게 하시는 하나님의 일에 우리도 동참할 수 있습니다. |

To the Israelites, the “day of Lord” was the day when God would judge all the foreign nations who are Israel’s enemies (Isaiah 13; Jeremiah 46; Ezekiel 30; Joel 3:1-16). At that time, God would pour out His blessings on Israel as His covenant nation (Isaiah 61; Joel 2:18-32; 3:17-21). Isaiah 35:4 encapsulates this twin mindset: “Your God is coming to destroy your enemies. He is coming to save you” (nlt). Prophesying about God’s judgment against the nations, the prophet warned, “The Lord is angry with all nations . . . . He will totally destroy them” (34:2). Then Isaiah assured God’s people about the glories that would await them when He comes to rescue and restore them (35:3-7). Jesus referred to verses 5-6 when he confirmed His messianic identity to encourage a disheartened John the Baptist in prison (Luke 7:18-23).
